Bethany Harper Williams
Bethany Harper-Williams is a visual artist born in Montreal in 1963. After graduating from Concordia Fine Arts with Honours in Graphic Design, She moved to Toronto to begin her career as a graphic designer.
She practiced for 20 years before devoting herself entirely to oil painting. It is through nature and landscapes that the artist finds inspiration for her paintings. Accustomed to the shores of lakes and the ocean, as well as the Maine region, she paints these spaces with fascination. It is above all the water that fascinates her, the calm and serenity that emanates from it, but also the movement that is its own, its incredible moods and memories it invokes. Water allows colours to circulate; it is an evolution that materializes time. Faced with these paintings, we get a peaceful feeling.
She captures a moment; she freezes it as a photograph, and even as a memory. It is a call to enjoy the present moment, to surrender. She breaks free from the codes of representation, details and gives her images vaporous tones. The artist works her canvases in a simplified way, allowing the energies to resurface in a landscape with minimal shapes and colours. Her work is Playful, sometimes whimsical, always memorable.
Her work was exhibited for the first time in 2011 at the Art Project in New York. Many of her oil paintings can be found in various private collections in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
